Jujutsu
The martial art of Jujutsu dates back approximately 2000 years and it’s name is indigenous to Japan, over the centuries Chinese martial arts have influenced a number of Jujutsu systems, at one stage over 700 styles of Jujutsu were recorded. Jujutsu was the unarmed martial art of the Samurai and the Ninja. The literal meaning of Jujutsu is flexible or gentle art. JIU or JU meaning supple, flexible, gentle, yielding etc. and JITSU or JUTSU meaning art. Generally, jiu jitsu is known as the gentle art.
By its description jujutsu is a generic term a classification, which covers the whole spectrum of body to body combat. Jujutsu can be defined as various unarmed or armed fighting systems that can be applied against, unarmed or armed assailants.
Traditional systems date between the 15th and 16th century some even older. Modern systems date from the late 1800’s to the present day.Jujutsu is the master art from where Judo and Aikido were created; Jujutsu has also influenced a number of Karate styles. Jujutsu based systems are used by the Police and Military worldwide.
Most styles either spell Jujutsu, JiuJitsu or Jujitsu, but are all promoting the art.
Areas of study:
- Safety falling (Break Falling).
- Kata, pre-arranged techniques consistent with the style.
- Striking, using various areas of the hand and elbow as a weapon.
- Kicking, using the foot and knee as weapons.
- Throwing, learning how to throw an opponent.
- Grappling, learning how to pin an opponent to the ground.
- Joint locking, locks applied to the joint for submission.
- Strangulations, applied for knockout and submission.
- Situation defences, prearranged defences from known attacks.
- Reflex training, learning how to use reflex skills from attack situations.
- Defences from a variety of Weapon Attacks. eg: knife, baton, broken bottle, knuckle duster, and chains.
